Pillow talk: we test out Levitex’s ‘Sleep Posture Pillow’

We test out the Levitex ‘Sleep Posture Pillow’ to see if it's worth committing to

For most of my life, I have used two feather and down-filled pillows to sleep on: a very soft and malleable one on the bottom that flattens easily, topped with a plumper, slightly firmer one on top. However, after being opposed to the idea for many years, I have started experimenting with memory foam, first becoming open to, then quickly becoming accustomed to and appreciating its benefits - particularly in terms of the support they provide. I’ve intermittently suffered from trapped nerves in my neck when waking up, for years, and had never attributed this to my pillow choices, but solely the position I had slept in. So when I heard about the Levitex Sleep Posture Pillow, which is described as being strictly not memory foam, but the company’s patented ‘Levitex foam’, I was intrigued. How could this be any different to the countless supportive memory foam pillows available in a saturated market?

Levitex’s ‘Sleep Posture Pillow’: is it worth buying?

The Levitex Sleep Posture Pillow comes in four different lofts (heights), designed to be adaptable to people of different shapes and sizes. After an initial sleep consultation with the company’s founder, James Leinhardt, I ordered the medium size which is 10cm deep, and is meant for side sleepers of 5’3″ to 5’8″, or back sleepers who are 6′3″ and above. The different heights allow you to find the right size to keep your head aligned with your spine, and stop your shoulders from caving forward, if you're a side sleeper like I am (most people are). I was concerned that it was too low for me because it feels so different to the previous pair of pillows I was using, and it does have more of a flat, solid look compared to the mounded, plump look that a pair of down pillows provides. But actually, after starting to use the pillow, it feels like it does keep my head in line. My pillowcase fits very snugly on it, but a little tighter than on my previous pillows.

This pillow does not, of course, have the sinking, cocooning effect that a down pillow does, but it makes up for it in the support it provides. The Levitex pillow does take a bit of getting used to. It’s described as medium firm, but I would say that it is more on the firm side, so would be better for those looking for a firmer, supportive pillow to sleep on. It also doesn't mould to the head and have that shape retaining feel that memory foam pillows tend to have; James stresses that the Levitex foam they use is not memory foam. Instead it has a more of an instant spring back and a lighter feel. So it feels less like a traditional, dense memory foam in that sense.

Levitex’s ‘Sleep Posture Pillow’ verdict

The option for tailored sizes is what makes this pillow stand out in a crowded market, as well as the texture of the foam - it does have a different texture to traditional memory foam, so may be worth a go for those who haven’t got on with memory foam ones in the past. That being said, I would mainly recommend this pillow to those who prefer a firm surface on which to rest their head - if you currently sleep on too thin or too soft pillows and suffer from neck or shoulder pain because of it, it will be quite a drastic switch to make, but one that will be worth it in time, for the better level of support that a pillow like this provides.

Something to thing to bear in mind, is that when the bed is fully made up, the Levitex pillow doesn’t quite have the same traditional, hotel-like look that you get when dressing a bed with two down pillows piled up (which I prefer) - this is due to the pillow’s shape and material. That being said, if a supportive pillow is your primary focus, this is a minor sacrifice to make if it helps to ease ailments and improve your posture while sleeping.
